ebrary Offers Free E-book Collection on Cyber Bullying

Dear Customers, Partners and Friends:

According to the U.S. National Crime Prevention Council, 43% of teens have been the victims of cyber bullying in the past year.

To help parents, educators, and others better understand, prevent, and take action against this growing concern, ebrary is pleased to subsidize a collection of open access e-books on cyber bullying and enable other organizations to contribute materials as long as they have copyrights.

Available today at http://site.ebrary.com/lib/cyberbullying, ebrary’s Cyber Bullying Searchable Information Center includes such titles as Click, Click, Who’s Really There?: Protect Your Family from Online Predators, Pedophiles, Privacy Loss and More, by Koh (LHK Publishing, LLC, 2006); Bullying Prevention and Intervention: Realistic Strategies for Schools, by Susan Swearer (Guilford Press, 2009); and Keep Your Kids Safe on the Internet, by Simon Johnson (McGraw-Hill, 2004). It also includes a growing selection of documents uploaded by ebrary employees from authoritative sites including the Pew Internet & American Life Project, U.S. Department of Justice, and other agencies.

ebrary encourages organizations to upload their own relevant materials, right from their computers, with DASH! (Data Sharing, Fast). Interested organizations may email tish.wagner@ebrary.com for a complimentary DASH! account. Customers of Academic Complete, College Complete, Public Library Complete, and Government Complete can get started on their own DASH! collections by emailing dash-support@ebrary.com.

The Cyber Bullying Searchable Information Center is just one of a growing number of open access collections created by ebrary employees and customers with DASH! A listing of additional, freely available collections is provided at http://www.ebrary.com/corp/accessCollections.jsp. If you are an ebrary customer and would like to add any of these collections to your existing channel, please email site-update@ebrary.com.

We hope the Cyber Bullying Searchable Information Center proves to be a valuable resource for better understanding and addressing this important issue. We welcome your feedback at dash@ebrary.com.

Sincerely,

The ebrary Team

Current CJO homepage

Cambridge Journals Online (CJO) is being redesigned to improve layout and navigation

Please note: URLs will not be changing

A redesigned CJO will be launched in October with improvements to the following key areas:

Appearance, Navigation, Ease of use, Consistency

These changes will simplify the key processes of content discovery, registration and personalisation, for both users and administrators.

Minor functionality changes
The general underlying functionality will be unchanged and all the URLs associated with CJO will remain the same. You will not need to modify your links.

There will be some minor functionality changes. For example:

Individual journal homepages
Current content and archives will be positioned more prominently on the page. Subscription prices will be more clearly labeled and easier to access.

Searching
Faceted searching across CJO and Cambridge Books Online will be introduced.

Last but not least
CJOMobile will be launching soon after the redesigned CJO.

We'll be in touch again soon with more detailed information about the forthcoming CJO enhancements.

Kind regards,
Tristan Collier
Cambridge Journals

At a glance:

● Enhanced page layout and display

● Improved, more intuitive navigation

● Easier access to popular features

● NO CHANGES to URLs. You will not need to modify your links.

● No changes to underlying functionality

● Faceted searching across CJO and Cambridge Books Online

● CJOMobile will launch soon after the redesign

● More detailed information to follow nearer to launch

Special message for librarians with low bandwidth internet access

Thanks to a simplified design, low resolution images and an emphasis on text, CJOMobile will also function as an access point for readers in countries with low bandwidth.

Normalization news

Normalization and authority title creation are the root of our knowledgebase, which is the foundation of our products. Since normalization goes on all the time, orchestrated by our editorial team, we'd like to point out the following milestones

  • Australian Newspaper database normalized to 100%: Our bibliographic control team worked in collaboration with the Libraries Australia to leverage their MARC record collection to normalize the Australian Newspaper database from 3% to 100%
  • Manually created authority titles hits 70,000: Our own metadata librarians, Kara Killough and Allison Feist, recently created TREDEG for Treballs de geografia. This bring the total of manually created authority titles to 70,000. This total doesn't even include the many MARC records or title variations we may have normalized to each authority title, which brings our number of serial titles to over 250K!

KnowledgeWorks Updates

  • American Physical Society's PROLA: URLs for PROLA - Physical Review Online Archive will be changing. Click here for details

360 Counter: New Pre-filtered Reports Now Available!

360 Counter customers now have the ability to take their complex usage data and create new pre-filtered reports for greater visibility into how collections are being accessed and used. New reports include:
• Titles from two or more providers
• Journals with a positive- or negative-percent change in use
• Platforms with a positive- or negative-percent change in use
• Top 100 journals calculated by use

• Navigate titles alphabetically
For more information about these new reports, and how you can use them, please click here.

360 MARC Updates: MARC Coding Changes Coming Soon!

Two MARC coding changes were adopted by the CONSER at the Operations Meeting in May. These changes took effect June 1, 2010. Serials Solutions MARC service customers can expect to receive change records in their MARC deliveries as CONSER incorporates these changes in their records. We will give you more information, as we receive it, about the timing of global updates. Please click here to sign up for future status updates and also learn more details about these changes.

Serials Solutions Support Center Upgrade

We are making some enhancements, functional and aesthetic, to the Support Center in order to help us provide you with even better service. Please note the following impacts:
• The Support Center will be unavailable for approximately 1 hour starting at 6 p.m. PDT on Friday, August 13 (World Time Clock Conversion). A notice will be on the site during this time reminding clients that we are performing maintenance.
• The Online Community will not be accepting new posts from Thursday, August 5, to Monday, August 16, so that the conversation threads and member profiles can be copied to an upgraded system coming online August 16. You will have the ability to read existing threads throughout the upgrade process.
After the upgrade, the Support Center will continue to function as it always has. It’s the place to go for accessing documentation, tracking questions/incidents you send to us, interacting with other Serials Solutions clients in the Online Community, and more.

Stay tuned for upcoming development news including faster data updates for our hosted 360 services and additional details about our Access Control Service.
